Welcome to Substitute Teachers Unite, a website and forum where substitute teachers from all over can come and realize that they are not alone. I, myself, am a substitute teacher, so I know first hand the struggles and frustrations substitute teachers face every day. When you meet someone, you're embarrassed to say you're a sub because that leads to the inevitable question, "why don't you get a real job?", or my personal favorite, "oh, you're a sub, so I guess you get paid for doing nothing all day." Then there is the district itself, which treats us like second rate temp employees who should be glad we are let in the building at all, let alone get a paycheck worth our time. For example, my district, which will remain nameless, gives no benefits, pays just $100 per day, does not allow us to join the teachers union, and will not allow you to work in September OR June if you're "lucky enough" to be chosen as a permanent sub. When I asked why this was the case, well, let's just say my questions were not greeted warmly. As subs, we all need to stick together to make our voices heard so we can get the fair treatment we deserve.
I know many of you out there have had similar experiences, and whether your experiences have been good or bad, we'd like to hear from you. I know that you, like myself, do what you do out of a pure love for teaching. Whether you are permanent or per-diem, searching for a full time teaching job or happy as a sub, please, join our forums, tell us about your good days and your bad, share information, and maybe, together, we can make substitute teaching a better job for all of us. |
